At the end of 2019 my 8th Graders and I had a 2019 Reflection Day. Both classes weighed in on 'what went right' and 'what could have gone better'. We narrowed their list down to eight topics that we would use to create their Consolidation Programme.
The process we followed was based on pure, self-guided study from my students. I provided them with a structure in which to operate, and a clear goal to achieve. They had to create a user-friendly guide to help other children in their Phase improve on their study skills, focus, exam skills and public speaking skills (to name but a few).
They were provided with a set of curated sources and had time in class to develop the Inquiry-based exploration of each topic.
No two groups' content are alike!
Each group member contributed to the overall project and the best part? They applied a natural 'self-scaffolding' approach. After they completed the 'Talent' section they divided the workload according to strengths and supported each other by keeping to self-imposed and -regulated deadlines.
I was their facilitator and was only called to action when they needed me. Providing technical support and explaining areas where they were unsure of and could not get clarity on as a group. It freed me up to monitor their progress and celebrate their growth!
I also have a lovely set of baseline information that will allow me to scaffold my students' work more effectively.
21st Century Learning and Effective Technology Integration
My students exhibited the full array of 21st Century skills. They collaborated fairly, kindly and with empathy; they were able to communicate clearly and work effectively towards a common goal; they applied creativity and critical thinking in devising a tool that would serve their school community.
By using technology effectively they were able to accommodate each other's strengths and weaknesses and present a self-scaffolded piece of evidence for deep learning. Technology was never the focus, but rather the delivery system of their learning journey.
This project started out as something that would help the Grade 9s become better at 'school'. It grew and developed into a service they are rendering their school community by creating content that is relevant and accessible to all. Students from the College Phase will be able to access their creations and choose the ones that suit their needs and find ways of growing in their own challenge areas.
I am so proud of my students and how much they have learned from this experience. Their confidence and kindness were a privilege to observe and I can't wait to see what they create for the rest of 2020!
